Stereolithography (SLA) is an additive manufacturing process using a vat of liquid UV-curable photopolymer "resin" and a UV laser to build parts a layer at a time.

Stereolithography (SLA) is an additive manufacturing process using a vat of liquid UV-curable photopolymer "resin" and a UV laser to build parts a layer at a time.  To create each layer, the laser traces a part cross-section pattern on the surface of the liquid resin. Exposure to the UV laser light cures, or, solidifies the pattern traced on the resin and adheres it to the layer below.

After a pattern has been traced, the SLA elevator platform descends by a single layer thickness, after which a resin-filled blade sweeps across the part cross section, re-coating it with fresh material. On this new liquid surface, the subsequent layer pattern is traced, adhering to the previous layer. A complete 3D part is formed by this process.

Stereolithography requires the use of support structures to attach the part to the elevator platform and to maintain the integrity of the geometry.  This is done to counteract deflection due to gravity, and to accurately hold the 2-D cross sections in place.  Supports are generated both automatically and manually during the preparation of 3D CAD models.  After building, parts are cleaned of excess resin support structures by immersion in a chemical bath, then cured in a UV oven.

We offer several finishing options for your SLA parts, please inquire about the finishing you would like to achieve with a GPI associate. Our finishing services provide you with a one stop shop for all your prototype and production needs including painting, texturing, engraving and plating.

Our SLA Finishing Levels Include:

  • Strip and Ship – Supports removed and minimally sanded in order to remove the support nubs left behind. Some nubs left in hard to reach areas. Build lines are visually present. Parts have a granulated/gritty texture.

  • Sanded and Bead Blasted – Supports removed. Parts are then bead blasted and sanded smooth. Build lines somewhat present. Parts have a smooth texture. Bead blasted parts will make clear parts look frosty.

  • Rapid Paint – Supports removed. Parts are sanded and bead blasted. Paint applied directly to parts without primer. Build lines somewhat present through the paint.

  • Rapid Clear – Supports removed. Parts sanded and bead blasted. Basic clear coat applied to parts. Build lines somewhat present under clear coat.

  • Show Quality Paint – Supports removed. Parts bead blasted and extensively sanded until all build lines are removed. Primer applied before paint. Pantone color or color chip will need to be supplied to match color. Parts are smooth and build lines are completely removed. Parts to look as close to production quality as possible.

  • Optically Clear – Supports removed. Parts bead blasted and extensively sanded until all build lines are removed. Multiple coats of clear are applied. Parts are smooth and build lines are completely removed. Parts are completely clear almost glass like.
