Description

As Project Engineer at GPI Prototype and Mfg Services you will be responsible for the oversight of our additive manufacturing testing and development. To be successful in this position, you will need to learn and understand the direct metal laser sintering process, develop manufacturing process plans, conduct FMEAs, failure analysis, root cause of non-conformances and oversee all communication with/between our shop and customer. Many of our customers are World-class, so meticulous attention to detail, strong communication/documentation skills, and a solid technical basis are critical to success.

It is expected that this position will also be involved with manufacturing and plant engineering projects related to our processes and facility in Lake Bluff.

Requirements

We will train you to become a subject matter expert in DMLS, the preeminent process for rapid prototyping in metal.

  • Minimum Qualifications.(Required to have your resume considered. Do not apply unless you have them.)
    • BS degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering. (Aeronautical or Aerospace engineering degrees are not acceptable for this position.)
    • 2 years minimum experience with manufacturing processes and metals.
    • Proficiency with CAD
    • US citizenship is required due to being an ITAR facility
  • Preferred Qualifications. (Any of these items are a plus, not necessarily required.) Please highlight in your application/resume.
    • Some type of specific training or experience in 3D printing, for example, DMLS, SLS, SLA.
    • Machine shop experience
    • Training or experience in Laser welding, CNC, EDM, project management, QC or QA (blue print/specifications, ISO, vision/inspection systems)
    • Intermediate or advanced proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks experience preferred).

Key Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes

  • Knowledge of Additive Manufacturing and Rapid Prototyping, especially DMLM.
  • Fundamentals of metal properties and applications, sufficient to know what questions to ask.
  • Knowledge of blueprint and tolerancing practices and conventions.
  • Overall understanding of traditional manufacturing methods (esp machining).
  • Can use CAD images to gather critical design information.
  • Ability to ascertain material selection/ requirements. Effective communication to extract and understand customer requirements.
  • Microsoft Office Suite skills—Excel, Word, PowerPoint. Blueprint reading.
  • General: Strong engineering fundamentals, communication and organization documentation skills.. Open-minded. Self-starter with ability to work alone or in cross-functional teams. A good teacher/trainer. Able to quickly take many different perspectives/ opinions and create a logical conclusion/solution or plan of action. A creative problem solver, with the ability to think on your feet.
Duties & Responsibilities

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as subject-matter expert on manufacturing processes and materials to ensure a high success rate in our Sales and Operations. Expect continual learning and growth in the technology of Direct Metal Laser Melting.
  • Effectively utilize our metallurgical lab equipment to expand our knowledge of our process. This task includes determining strategic test builds, effective sectioning of parts, cutting, mounting, polishing and examination of resultant specimens.
  • Support our Sales efforts through participation in Customer discussions and review of potential projects.
  • Conduct pre-production review of projects for capacities, instructions and risks.
  • Conduct post-production review, including participating in root cause analysis of non-conformances.
  • Expand our process/materials/properties information data base through effective design of experiments and analysis
  • Provide production support and trouble-shooting. Enhance routings with key instructions for the shop to ensure that customer requirements are clearly defined and met.
  • Conduct Failure Analysis, PFMEA write ups
