Machine Technician


GPI Manufacturing, Inc headquartered in Lake Bluff, IL, is a growing business with 30+ employees and two divisions.

Since 1980, GPI Anatomicals has engineered and manufactured educational anatomical models for pharmaceutical & medical device companies and anatomical model distributors from around the world.

Established in 2007, GPI Prototype & Manufacturing Services serves all major industries as a rapid prototype and small volume manufacturer, particularly in the area of 3D printing/ additive manufacturing with metal printing as an in-house specialty.

GPI has an exciting opportunity open for the right individual to join our Additive Manufacturing Production Team. This position is titled “OP” because it is a Production (Operations) position – with the primary activity being machine operation. However, we include the term ‘Tech’ because the machines you will operate are high tech. To be an effective operator, you will need to learn the technology involved, and details of the machine’s operation. The machines that you will be responsible to set-up and run are Production-based Direct Metal Laser Sintering Machines, cut-off, and heat treating equipment. We will train you for this position.
You will start off as a “C’ level Tech, which basically means you are a candidate. You will advance in pay to a ‘B’ level within the first 30 to 60 day period when we confirm your retention, and demonstration of skills and knowledge taught. You will advance again in pay to an ‘A’ level (approximately 180 days) when you have been determined to be ‘independent’.
In addition to a 40 hour work week, ‘A’ level techs are expected to serve “on-call” for off-hour servicing of the machines. Estimated at 2 to 3 times a week.


Qualified candidates should be:

  • above average in electro-mechanical knowledge and skills
  • skilled with hand tools (hex, torque, wrenches, etc)
  • skilled in measurement instruments( digital indicators, calipers, scales, multi-meter)
  • have strong computer skills – proficient word processing and data entry - CAD experience a plus (specifically CAD file manipulation – ie rotate and section views)
  • Basic knowledge of tolerancing practices, and associated ‘math’
  • Reliable and independent transportation; available to work ‘on-call’ or off-hour when needed
  • be able to work independently and as part of the Production Team
  • conscientious; fast learner; safe/careful operator
  • ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (ideal candidate to contribute to authoring)
  • basic math skills; understanding of 3-D object (XYZ visualization/orientation)
  • proficient with a camera
